Chapter 16

A cold chill from a high-velocity fan hit Zo when he walked into one of his warehouses. He was going around checking up on things and overseeing that all backed-up orders were being shipped out. The last thing he wanted was another Jahmar coming out of the wood works. He wanted to keep all of his customers happy.

Zo was pleased to see that there wasn’t a still body in sight. Even with all of the freight boxes stacked around, there was room for everyone to bustle around and get their jobs done. It smelled like cedar, and Zo could hear the machinery going in the back. Sometimes they had to make their own shipment containers to fulfill orders. Zo was happy that everyone was making good use of their time. He got the attention of a man named Martin as he passed.

“How is everything coming along?” Zo asked.

“What’s up, boss!” Martin greeted him. “So far so good. A few of the trucks are running late, but we should still be able to get everything out by the end of the day.”

“Perfect. How is inventory looking?”

“Demand is picking up again, but we should be good for another two months before we need to restock again. No one is asking for anything crazy so far.”

“Good,” Zo said even though that wasn’t how he felt.

Louisa had made things very loud and clear that she would not supply him anymore unless he came to Florida. She had put him in a very delicate position. Even with everything she showed them that Florida had to offer, it didn’t compare to home. He didn’t want to leave. He wanted to help Boogie rebuild what had fallen.

“Is everything okay, boss?” Martin asked, interrupting his thoughts.

“Why wouldn’t they be?” Zo wondered if the unease he felt showed on his face.

“It’s just”—Martin looked around and lowered his voice—“a lot of us heard about Eduardo. I still can’t believe he would do something like that. Not after everything Marco did for him.”

“Well, he did. And if you heard about what he did, then you heard about what happened to him too, eh?” Zo asked, and Martin nodded his head slowly. “Good. That or worse will be anyone else’s fate who chooses to betray me. Now get back to work.”

Martin hurried along and left Zo to continue his walk around. The warehouse was filled with crates, like it always was. He tried not to think about what would happen once it all cleared out. As long as he had breath in his body, it wouldn’t.

“Zo!”

He groaned loudly when he heard his sister’s voice. He had been trying hard to avoid her ever since they got back home. And that included staying in his condo instead of the family house and ignoring her phone calls. He didn’t even know how she had found him. There were at least five other warehouses that she could have checked before that one. He could have acted like he didn’t hear her, but there were entirely too many firearms in arm’s reach of her.
